Guarding Against Obesity

April 27, 2010 by Dennis Chighisola

Two of my all-time favorite Twitter friends are responsible for the following video.

First, Mike Mahony hosts an awesome site called The Muscle Building Fat Burning Video Blog, where he promises to help regular folks (like you and me) cut through all the information overload we might be getting from all the so-called fitness experts out there today.

Secondly, this post features the star of a previous CoachChic.com entry (“A Different Kind of Hockey Warm-ups“), Maryse Senecal.

Actually, the two, both Maryse and Mike, worked together to put this video together, and I’m extremely grateful that they’ve allowed me to show it to my CoachChic.com members.

Guarding Against Obesity

Okay, while obesity might not be a problem for many hockey players, we all know that it surely is within the general population — in Maryse’s native Canada, and across the United States.

So, when I had a chance to see the following video over on Mike’s site, I thought it a good idea to share it with my friends here.

In particular, I really like Maryse’s common sense approach to things.  But, you judge for yourself…

If you get the chance, visit Maryse Senecal‘s site over at Myo-Precision for tons more health tips!

And, get to know Michael Mahony on his site, Fitness Expose for lots more fitness tips.

Hey, do the old coach a favor, and cheer-on our two contributors, huh — especially Maryse, who still thinks she’s everything but awesome in front of a camera! :)

As I watched this video again (for about the umpteenth time), what I’m struck by is Maryse’s common sense approach. Oh, I’m not just talking about the way she addresses the above subject, or the previous set of videos she did for us on a different kind of warm. You see, in coming to know Maryse, I’ve also come to realize that she seemingly treats most subjects with a great deal of common sense.

Okay, so why am I mentioning that here? Well, it’s because Maryse’s approach is very much in line with the way I like to treat hockey training.

Understand that I am absolutely a hockey nut. And, it’s a rare time that you’ll find me working on anything but. At the same time, however, I find it necessary to (drastically?) taper my approach when I’m dealing with others.

For example, most of us coaches and parents here at CoachChic.com work with North American kids, North American families, etc. And, that means fitting hockey training into a North American lifestyle. Oh, sure, we might be able to help create the best players in the world with 24/7 training, but that just doesn’t make sense, at least in “my world”. Naw, hockey families want to have a life, and I truly believe that our approach to training has to be built around that. In fact, as much as I’m into hockey, I sense I’d turn-off an awful lot of players and parents if my time demands cut too greatly into their normal lifestyle.

So, I guess what I’m saying is that we — players, parents and coaches — want to get as much hockey training in as possible, while at the same time making that fit in a sane, common sense way with our lifestyle.
